14 Aug Brisbane Cake Smash | Sam Turns 1!
The day that our first son, Will, turned one, I started a tradition of taking the boys’ portraits every year on their birthday. Between Will & Sam we’ve had five birthdays, and haven’t missed one yet.
So as Sam’s first birthday was approaching, I knew I wanted to do a mini portrait session – but I was determined to be more organised than I was with Will, and do a little cake smash for him too. Poor Will missed out – even though his smash cake was baked in advance and frozen, the photos and consumption just never came to fruition!
We started with some individual photos. Will helped me “test the light” while Sam was having a nap and I love how his photos turned out. So much personality and cheekiness!
Sam’s photos were next, dressed in his gorgeous first birthday outfit from my parents and brother & sister-in-law.
And then on to the fun stuff! I made a Dachshund cake at the same time that I made his actual birthday party cake. He was chowing down with enthusiasm at his party, so I was keen to see how he’d attack this on. Unfortunately, he was more perplexed by the whole scenario! But big brother Will joined in and helped him figure it out.
And a bath to finish – I LOVE these ones!
A note for clients and for next time… the Dachshund cake might be cute (and relevant to us as a family), but I wasn’t thrilled with how it photographed, given it was hard to see properly from the angle that most of the session was shot.
Massive thanks goes to my hubby for helping with this one – it’s definitely a two adult operation! I intentionally used very simple styling with this cake smash, in keeping with my style for regular family and baby sessions, and also to ensure the focus was just on Sam & Will. Both the cake stand and “bath” were from Wheel & Barrow.
